Where Did the Copilot Button Go? Here's Why It Disappeared from Your Office Apps

If you've been relying on Copilot within Office 365 applications like Word or Excel, only to suddenly find the button vanishing from your screen, you're not alone. Starting April 15, 2026, countless Microsoft 365 users on basic Copilot plans or without proper licensing lost access to this feature entirely. So what exactly happened, and more importantly, what can you do about it?
Which Office Versions Still Show the Copilot Button
Microsoft made a strategic push this April to encourage users toward Copilot Premium subscriptions. Part of that strategy involved removing the Copilot button from Office applications for specific user tiers.
Basic Microsoft 365 subscribers now only get Copilot Chat—a lighter version for conversations and support in apps like SharePoint and Office, but without web browsing capabilities. Previously, the Copilot button remained visible even for these users. That's no longer the case.
Here's what's interesting: organization size matters too. Companies with over 2,000 users won't see the Copilot button either. They'll need to upgrade to a higher-tier plan to regain access.
You can still reach Copilot through the web app, your browser, the Edge toolbar, or Outlook. The real concern here is that the deeply integrated Copilot experience directly within Office applications? That's now Premium-only.
How to Fix the Missing Copilot Button in Office
Check Your Office Subscription Status
The quickest way to determine whether your license is active or expired is to verify through your Microsoft account.
Sign in to Microsoft using your account, then click your profile picture and select View account to review your details.

On the new page, click Subscriptions to see your current plan. If it's expired, look to the side and select Resubscribe to renew your subscription.

Upgrade to Premium Office 365
Open your Office 365 application and navigate to Account. Then tap Update License to upgrade to Premium Office 365, which will restore your Copilot button.
Review Privacy Settings in Office
Privacy permission settings might be blocking the Copilot button from appearing. You'll need to adjust a few settings within Office 365 to fix this.
Click the File tab, then select Account. In the new window, click Manage Settings under Account Privacy. Make sure both Turn on optional connected experiences and Experiences that analyze your content are enabled.
