Can fix Error 0x80240439 Windows Update on Windows 10?

This article is for users who are really looking forward to fixing Windows Update error 0x80240439 on Windows 10. Specifically, the error is as follows:

There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80240439).

I have tried many ways to fix error 0x80240439. However, this error cannot be fixed. The methods I have tried are as follows:

1. Stop/Start update service by Command line

net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc

net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc

2. Clear files & folder on folder C:\Windows\Software Distribution

3. Restart Windows Update service on services.msc

4. Using DISM on Command line

dism /online /cleanup-image /ScanHealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /CheckHealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

5. Using SFC on Command line

sfc /scannow
chkdsk /f C:

6. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

7. Update latest version Windows by Media Creation Tool
(I updated from Windows 10 PRO version 20H2 to 21H2)

8. Reset proxy (updated 08 March 2022)

I have had success with this method on customer computer. Try resetting the proxy server settings by following the steps below:

Step 1: Open Command Prompt (by run as Administrator)

Step 2: Type command and hit Enter: netsh winhttp reset proxy

If you have tried the methods or 1 of the above and cannot fix the error 0x80240439. I advise you not to try and waste time to fix this error anymore. Because there are many reasons causing above error. The most common ones include corrupted Windows files, incomplete installation of a Windows Update, and a broken Windows Update.

If you are someone who wants perfection (like me). I recommend that you re-install Windows 10 to the latest version to completely fix the above error. I believe, you have tried to fix the error but this is a system error or a file loss in the system. You can hardly fix it completely.

What is Feeds in task manager?

Feeds/Search application is a process on Windows 10. You can see Feeds/Search Application process in the Task Manager as below:

 Feeds/Search application in Task Manager

This process runs in the background on Windows 10, to be used for the “News and Interests” feature. “News and Interests” feature uses the MSN feed to enable quick access to dynamic content such as headlines, sports, finance, and weather.

News and interest feature on Windows 10

This process will still run in the background to update the feed throughout the day. It uses up to 100-150MB of memory on the virtual machines with 4GB, 6GB and 8GB of RAM. In a lot of cases it can use up to 97-100% of the RAM capacity.

How to fix Feeds using all RAM in Task Manager

However, the memory usage is normally zero when the news and weather feed is not actively looking for new contents or weather forecasts. In addition, you can customize this feature by how to customize News and interests.

Fixed "Feeds" was taking more than 30 GB of RAM

The problem has been reported by many, but not all users. This issue is: Feeds/ Search application using all of the RAM in Task Manager on Windows 10.

What is the Feeds in task manager

Specifically, the computer runs very slowly compared to normal. And when opened Task Manager to see that System, Feeds (Search application) is using CPU and Disk quite heavily and as much ram that it can to pin it to 97- 100%.

Currently, Microsoft has not found the cause or specific solution to fix the above error. A lot of users have wondered and asked for a fix (it happens a lot on Lenovo, Dell, strong configuration as well as normal machine configuration).

Temporarily, we have a few measures below that will help you fix the above error:

Step 1: Open Task Manager > Disable/End task to Feeds/ Search application.

Step 2: Turn off News and Interests on taskbar.

➤  How to customize News and Interest

Step 3: Run & installed latest Windows Updates. At this point you should update KB5010415 Windows 10 Updates - The "C" preview updates on 15th February 2022
You can get this update by check for update on windows 10 or  download directly from Microsoft Update Catalog.

With the above 3 steps, many users were able to temporarily fix error Feeds using all ram. Please give it a try and let me know the results. If you have any problem, please comment below or send a question on QTitHow Fanpage. Alternatively, you can watch a video tutorial from QTitHow on Youtube here.

  • New!  Provides the ability to share cookies between Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer mode and Microsoft Edge.
  • Updates an issue that causes Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer mode to stop working when you press the F1 key.
  • Updates an issue that affects dialog boxes in Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer mode.
  • Updates an issue that causes screen readers to describe a back button as "button" rather than "back button".
  • Updates an issue that sometimes causes the Chinese Simplified Input Method Editor (IME) to become completely unusable.
  • Updates an issue that causes a mismatch between a Remote Desktop session’s keyboard and the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) client when signing in.
  • Updates an issue that prevents printing from operating properly for some low integrity process apps.
  • Addresses an issue that causes certificate enrollment to fail with the error message,” 0x800700a0 (ERROR _BAD_ARGUMENTS)”.
  • New!  Adds support for hot adding and the removal of non-volatile memory (NVMe) namespaces.
  •  Addresses an issue that occurs when Windows Server 2016 runs as a terminal server using certain cloud computing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). As result, the servers randomly stop responding after running for a period of time. This also addresses a regression that proactively checks to ensure that the CSharedLock in rpcss.exe is set correctly to avoid a deadlock.
  •  Addresses an issue that affects the Windows search service and occurs when you query using the proximity operator.
  •  Addresses a memory leak in the wmipicmp.dll module that causes a lot of false alarms in the System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) datacenter monitoring system.
  •  Addresses an issue that causes the Remote Desktop Service (RDS) server to become unstable when the number of signed in users exceeds 100. This prevents you from accessing published applications using RDS on Windows Server 2019.
  • Addresses an issue that returns an error message when you browse for a domain or organizational unit (OU). This issue occurs because of improper zeroing out of memory.
  • Addresses an issue that causes the Group Policy Management Console to stop working after you close it. The system logs Application Error Event ID 1000 and the error, 0xc0000005 (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION); the failing module is GPOAdmin.dll.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to show the Startup impact values in Task Manager.
  • Addresses an issue that affects OpenGL and GPU reparenting in indirect display scenarios.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents ShellWindows() from returning the InternetExplorer object when iexplore.exe runs in the Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer mode context.
  • Addresses an issue that causes the improper cleanup of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) objects. This prevents session teardown and causes a session to stop responding.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause a device to stop working when you use more than 50 window trees.
  • Addresses an issue that affects applications that are written to only integrate with Azure Active Directory (AAD). These applications will not work on machines that are joined to Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS).
  • Introduces support for Windows Hello for Business Cloud Trust. This is a new deployment model for hybrid deployments of Windows Hello for Business. It uses the same technology and deployment steps that support on-premises single sign-on (SSO) for Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) security keys. Cloud Trust removes the public-key infrastructure (PKI) requirements for deploying Windows and simplifies the Windows Hello for Business deployment experience.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause BitLocker to damage virtual machine (VM) system files if you expand the BitLocker partition while the VM is offline.
  • Addresses a remaining issue that might cause the Get-TPM PowerShell command to fail when it attempts to report Trusted Platform Module (TPM) information. The command fails with the error, “0x80090011 Microsoft.Tpm.Commands.TpmWmiException,Microsoft.Tpm.Commands.GetTpmCommand”.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents you from unloading and reloading drivers when the drivers are protected Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI).
  • Addresses a reliability issue that affects the use of the Remote Desktop app to mount a client’s local drive to a terminal server session.
  • Addresses an issue that occurs when you try to write a service principal name (SPN) alias (such as www/FOO) and HOST/FOO already exists on another object. If the RIGHT_DS_WRITE_PROPERTY is on the SPN attribute of the colliding object, you receive an “Access Denied” error.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents administrators and content owners from opening expired Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) content.
  • Addresses an issue that disconnects Offline Files on the network drive after you restart the OS and sign in. This issue occurs if the Distributed File System (DFS) path is mapped to the network drive.
  • Addresses an issue that causes VM Live Migration to fail because vhdmp.sys receives different file control block (FCB) object pointers for the same file.
  • Addresses an issue that displays the authentication dialog twice when you mount a network drive.
  • Addresses a memory leak in the Redirected Drive Buffering Subsystem (RDBSS) and the mrxsmb.sys drivers.
  • Addresses an issue that causes a deadlock in the WebDav redirector. This issue occurs when you attempt to read a file from the local TfsStore, which causes the system to stop responding.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents Work Folder sync from recovering from the error code 0x80c80003, “Server is currently busy" on the client. This issue occurs even when the HTTP request queue on the server does not indicate a load.

Overview

On 08th February 2022, Microsoft released two main cumulative updates for Windows 10 - KB5010342 and KB5010345. In addition, Microsoft also released updates for Windows 10 version 1909, 1809, 1607, 1507. Details are as follows:

Improvements and fixes

Main fixed:

According to the official release note, Microsoft has fixed the error with message:

“Error: 0x20EF. The directory service encountered an unknown failure”

An issue whereby Lightweight Directory Access Protocol operation could fail if the operation contains the Sam Account Name and User Account Control attributes.

Additionally, Microsoft has fixed some issues as below:

  • Updates daylight savings time to start in February 2022 instead of March 2022 in Jordan.

Special patches for some versions in this update release:

For KB5010359 (OS Build 14393.4946) for Windows 10 version 1607

  • Updates the phone number for Windows Activation for locales that have the wrong phone number.
  • Fixed the error, “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL”.
  • Fixed issue that causes the improper cleanup of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) objects. This prevents session teardown and causes a session to stop responding.
  • Fixed access violation in IKEEXT.dll that occurs on Always On VPN (AOVPN) and DirectAccess servers. The exception code is 0xC000005.
  • Fixed issue that affects Administrative Template settings you configure using a Group Policy Object (GPO). When you change the value of the policy setting to NOT CONFIGURED, the system fails to remove the previous setting. This issue is most noticeable for roaming user profiles.
  • Fixed a memory leak that occurs when you call WinVerifyTrust(). This issue occurs if verification fails for the first signature of a file that has multiple signatures.
  • Fixed a known issue that affects versions of Windows Server that are in use as a Key Management Services (KMS) host. Client devices running Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016 might not activate. This issue only occurs when using a new Customer Support Volume License Key (CSVLK) and after installing updates released April 22, 2021 or later.
  • Adds an audit event to Active Directory domain controllers that identifies clients that are not compliant with RFC 4456. For more information, see KB5005408: Smart card authentication might cause print and scan failures.
  • Fixed an issue that might cause Kerberos.dll to stop working within the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS). This occurs when LSASS processes simultaneous Service for User (S4U) user-to-user (U2U) requests for the same client user.

For KB5010358 (OS Build 10240.19204) for Windows 10 initial version released July 2015

“Your Microsoft Exchange administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance.”

Hi Everyone,

Users will see the following error message in Outlook:

“Your Microsoft Exchange administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance.”

Download & Install Microsoft 365 Apps by Office Deployment Tool

Outlook will now be disabled or trying to connect. You CAN NOT send and receive any email.

The reason is that you are using Microsoft 365 (email service) on Office (Outlook) 2007, 2010, 2013. Detail as below:

"After November 1, 2021, only Outlook 2013 Service Pack 1 (with latest fixes) and later will be able to connect to Microsoft 365 services. It’s worth noting here that Outlook 2007, 2010, and Office 2013 versions earlier than 15.0.4971.1000 *and Office 2016 versions earlier than 16.0.4600.1000 aren’t supported"

If you are using Office 2007, 2010 please note the following times, your Outlook will not be able to connect to Mail Exchange (Microsoft 365):

  • The block will start rolling out on November 1st 2021 for users on Outlook 2007 and will proceed in a phased rollout.
  • The block has started rolling out for Outlook 2010 users on January 11, 2022 and will proceed in a phased rollout.

Outlook users will see the following error message in Outlook, when they experience the block that we are rolling out: “Your Microsoft Exchange administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance.”

Why are we blocking old versions?

Older versions of Outlook, such as Outlook 2007 and 2010 are incompatible with the following upcoming service changes, which is prompting this controlled block:

  1. Support for basic authentication is ending to increase the security of Microsoft 365 by relying on modern authentication protocols, which are not only more secure, but also provide compliance and policy controls to help you manage your data.
  2. We’re working on adding support for HTTP/2 in Microsoft 365. HTTP/2 is a full duplex protocol, which decreases latency through header compression and request multiplexing. On the service side, we’ll be able to better prioritize requests and more effectively push data to clients.
  3. It can be a challenge to stay current, but there are many reasons why staying current is a good idea:
  4. Security fixes will protect your devices against known vulnerabilities.
  5. Reliability – over the last five years we’ve eliminated 75% of crashes in Outlook!
  6. Updated versions have all the coolest new features to make your life easier!

Solution

Users can immediately start using Outlook on the web through a browser on their Windows (or any other) device. This is temporary solution.

I recommend switching to Office 365 or higher versions of Office like Office 2019 or Office 2021.

Outlook on the web

Upgrade guidance

  • For Office 2007 and 2010, use the roadmaps listed below to move to Microsoft 365 Apps. If your organization is highly regulated or uses devices that can’t take updates, consider Office 2019
  • For Office 2013, move to Version 15.0.4971.1000 of Office 2013 (Service Pack 1 with the October 2017 Update)
  • For Office 2016, move to Version 16.0.4600.1000 of Office 2016 (With the November 2017 Update, KB4051890)
  • Office 2007 end of support roadmap
  • Office 2010 end of support roadmap

Conclusion

Above is all information related to this error. If you or your company are using Microsoft 365 services on Office software versions 2013, 2010, 2007, please pay attention.

What version of Windows are there?

Ever wondered what version of Windows your computer is running? For example, Windows 11, Windows 10 or Windows 7...

Knowing this basic information is essential for every computer user. What will it help you?

  • You will know what software you can install, choose the software for the right version of Windows
  • Install the driver for the computer
  • Get help faster on something

And to recognize it is extremely simple, you do not need to be too knowledgeable about computers. Here are the Windows versions (I will sort the versions from highest to lowest).

Windows 11:

This is the latest version of Windows officially released by Microsoft in October 2021. Currently, the number of Windows 11 users is still quite small. You will see it a lot in the next few years. This is the official look and feel of Windows 11:

Did you notice, for Windows 11, the location of the Start Menu is in the middle of the Taskbar. This is the most noticeable point (as it is the biggest change compared to Windows 10 and Windows 7).

In particular, the design of icons for folders and files on Windows 11 is different from previous versions.

Windows 10:

Currently this is a very popular version in the world. And your computer is most likely also using Windows 10. More specifically, if you buy a new computer, I am 99.99% sure you are using Windows 10. And here is the main interface (GUI) of Windows 10:

You see, the Start menu on Windows 10 will be located in the bottom left corner of the screen, with the typical Windows icon. This point helps you differentiate between Windows 11 and Windows 10.

And just like Windows 11, if you right-click on the Windows icon, you will see the Power User Menu:

Power User Menu

Also, pay attention to the folder icon of Windows 10. You will see the difference with Windows 11 and Windows 8, 7 & Vista.

Windows 8 & 8.1

This is a rather special version. Currently very few users use Windows 8 or 8.1. Why? Because it has too many bugs and is not stable. The typical interface of Windows 8 and 8.1 is the Metro interface. To do this, press Windows (hotkey), or click the Windows (Start) icon at the bottom left of the screen.

Windows 7

If you are using Windows 7, it will look like this:

The Start button icon is typical of Windows 7 and Windows Vista. However, fits completely inside the taskbar, unlike the one for Windows Vista.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista was the previous version of Windows 7. A version that marked Microsoft's true innovation. Completely different from Windows XP. And here is what it looks like:

As you read in the Windows 7 section above, both versions of Windows have similar Start buttons and menus. One way to tell them apart is to look at the button itself—the one in Windows Vista, unlike in Windows 7, extends above and below the taskbar.

Windows XP

This is a nostalgic version of Windows for the 9x generations. There are still users who are using this old version of Windows today.

That identifying feature is the Start button at the bottom left corner of the screen. Not to be confused with any previous version.

Conclusion:

Above are 6 popular versions of Windows: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8 or 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.
I hope this article will help you easily distinguish the versions of Windows. As a casual user you should know these basics. It will help you a lot while using the computer.
