Beyond aesthetics, those glowing keys actually serve a practical purpose: they help you see the keyboard in low-light conditions. Here's the catch though: once you power down your PC, those LEDs often stay lit, which can be annoying if you're trying to keep your setup dark or if you're running an internet café and can't just cut power to individual peripherals.

If you own your own rig, the simple solution is to power down completely or unplug the system — but that's not practical for business environments. The good news? You can disable those LEDs through your BIOS settings without needing to kill the power entirely. Let's walk through the process for the major motherboard manufacturers.

1. ASUS Motherboards

ASUS boards handle this similarly to ASRock boards, so the process is fairly straightforward. If you're unfamiliar with accessing BIOS on your system, there are plenty of guides available to help you get started.

Most ASUS motherboards boot directly into EZ Mode. To proceed, press F7 to enter Advanced Mode, then navigate to the Advanced tab. Look for APM Configuration > ERP Ready and select Enable (S4 + S5). If that specific option doesn't exist, just choose Enabled. Press F10 and confirm with Yes to save your changes. Shut down your computer and verify that your mouse and keyboard LEDs are now off.

2. ASRock Motherboards

The process for ASRock boards mirrors the ASUS approach. The BIOS interface is fairly consistent across most manufacturers, making this adjustment relatively painless. From the EZ Mode screen, press F6 (instead of F7 like ASUS) to access Advanced Mode.

Once in Advanced Mode, head to the Advanced tab and find Chipset Configuration > Deep Sleep > Enabled in S4-S5. Hit F10 and select Yes to save your settings. Power down your system to confirm the LEDs stay dark.

Gigabyte boards are everywhere, and their BIOS is pretty user-friendly. Navigate to Power Management > locate the ERP option and set it to Enabled. Press F10 to save and exit. Shut down to test whether the LEDs turn off.

4. MSI Motherboards

MSI boards have a distinctly different BIOS interface — fitting for gaming-focused hardware — but the logic remains consistent with Gigabyte and ASUS. In BIOS, navigate to Settings (right column) > Advanced > Power Management Setup > EuP and toggle it to Enabled. Save with F10 and power down to verify the changes took effect.
